MINUTES
1. Michael reported on interviewing/hiring. Kurt Goetsch has accepted; offers out to Zoe Chou and MJ Han.
2. Betsy gave update on OCA issues. Betsy, Beth, and Karen have a conference call scheduled with Brewster Kahle next Tuesday, September 5. Jeff Schrader is trying to arrange a second walk through of Oak Street 3rd floor, this time with our F&S project coordinator. Beth and Bob have conveyed to Jeff that space must be ready by December 1, 2006. Betsy, Michael, Annette Morris, and Tom Teper are forming a Workflow subcommittee to begin developing OCA workflows. Betsy, Beth, Michael, and Mary will be meeting sometime next week with Mark Sadler at CIC regarding running comparison between University of Michigan and UIUC collections using OCLC Collection Analysis Tool to help us narrow our subject scope for the OCA component. Michael reported that our retrocon files should be uploaded to OCLC next week.
3. Betsy reminded group of conversation last week with Rick Prelinger re: our giving him a proposal to present to Microsoft for funding to digitize our Slavic film. We decided Slavic film was problematic due to physical condition and copyright since most of it was filmed for us by Russian libraries. Discussed alternate proposal for scanning film we made through NEH grants (German lit, irish political and religious history; Spanish literature; German dissertations; women's studies (CIC project); American education (Wines Collection, N. O'Brien). Betsy will write Rick and see if he'd be interested in seeing a proposal on this instead of the Slavic film. If he is, Michael and David Vess will work on gathering more info on our holdings.
4. Group clarified its understanding of scope of scanning to be done this year:
- $103,000 currently set aside to do several smaller Illinois focused projects this FY.
- $200,000 set aside for OCA mass digitization (OCA)
- Sometime this fall, we will put out a call for other projects to be funded NEXT fiscal year, assuming we obtain ongoing funding.
5. Betsy raised concern about getting selector input into the OCA mass scanning component of this project (not the Illinois related content). Agreed to explore possibility of a forum soon.
6. Began reviewing the info everyone gathered and input into the Illinois Projects Data Collection Form. We eliminated several from funding this FY. Betsy has now updated the form and projects we decided to eliminate this year are grayed out. Updated file is now on the wiki.
7. Next week we'll continue our review, possibly eliminating a few more, and rank ordering the others. Several requests for estimates are still outstanding.
