Large Scale Digitization Working Group Meeting
Wednesday, August 8, 2007
10:00-11:00am
Room 230B
AGENDA
- RFP update and questions
- FY08 budget update
- Selection for digitization in FY08
MINUTES
- RFP - Northern Micrographics
- For pages that have typing only on one side, they scanned the blank side too
- Ask to remove blank pages
- XML will be looked at today
- Bi-tonal JP2s won't open in Adobe
- Look into writing a script that will open them page by page
- Other options: NM could scan in grayscale, we could convert to bi-tonal afterwards. More expensive? Is reading quality or OCR affected?
- Adding title, author, and character limit is fine
- Ask them to keep line formatting and PB tags in OCR
- Budget
- spent all of FY07
- $80,000 budget for FY08 plus $11,100 in donations
- fundraising letter went out 3 months ago
- microfilm scanning now must come out of this budget
- $120,000 will fund OCA scanning to July 09
- Selection and collection development
- CDC is working on collection development policy for digital content
- Keep building in areas we've already started?
- Look into creating depth in subjects not available in Google/Microsoft and/or enhanced content for scholarly use
- We need to get subject selector buy-in on a large scale, get them to dedicate collection development money to digitization
- Possible problems: intellectual property and follow-through (sustainability of small projects)
- Cornell has a model where faculty can apply for digitization funding as if applying for a grant
- Look at Brown's selection procedures
- Ask Cornell about procedures for orphan digital collections
- Betsy will bring a proposal to the CDC
- collections need to be identified by Jan/Feb
- Carli board has passed money to fund a scanner for FY09
- Collection development user group will set the scope (maybe local history)
- Two metadata positions have been posted
- Proquest thesis project was turned down for funding. Try to get funding from individual schools.
