To insure that the special funding received by the Library from campus and the state legislature for digitization efforts is expended successfully and purposefully by June 30, 2007.
To plan and coordinate the Library’s participation in the Open Content Alliance, regardless of whether an OCA scanning center is established at UIUC, and to make recommendations on UIUC representatives to serve on OCA Working Groups.
To explore and begin developing integrated access to UIUC owned/created digital content via an OAI-PMH Web portal, and to roll-out a prototype of such a portal during Fall 2006.
To develop short-term selection criteria for digitization to guide the currently funded project, and which can serve as a springboard for the development of long-term selection criteria.
To document costs involved in all aspects of mass digitization to serve as the basis for securing future permanent funding and staff resources.
To develop in-house expertise in this area through staff reallocation and training.
To coordinate with campus groups who are planning large digitization projects to insure that digital content is developed according to existing standards and is stored and delivered by the Library in line with its preservation and access mission.
Develop a systematic format for documenting the nature and status of, and responsible parties for, digital projects in the Library.
To coordinate our efforts and objectives with the restructuring currently underway of activities in the Preservation Department in order to avail ourselves of existing expertise, achieve consistency, and avoid duplication.
