Large Scale Digitization Working Group Meeting
Wednesday, October 31, 2007
10:00-11:00am
Room 423
MINUTES
- Proposal for CIC Shared Digital Repository is in draft form
- Michigan & Indiana are acting as service providers by taking on the responsibility of creating and administering the repository
- The other CIC libraries came up with a list of questions to ask them
- As soon as the agreement is signed, we can link to public domain works that Michigan has digitized and we own from our catalog.
- We can't make derivative copies
- Repository is shared in terms of access, but not in terms of ownership
- content belongs to the digitizing library
- governance structure will be compromised of two advisory boards
- operational - 2 repository admins (from Indiana & Michigan) plus 1 or 2 people representing the CIC
- strategic - 2 repository admins (from Indiana & Michigan) plus reps from other libraries in the SDR
- The repository is a service, not a CIC collaborative project
- Michigan suggested that libraries think in terms of a 5 year commitment
- Flexible ingest processes to accommodate non-Google content
- OCA content to be put into SDR?
- what's the advantage?
- will there be aggregate services that make doing it worthwhile?
- Michigan is building an "inventory database" of the content for the SDR, showing who owns what, using their MIRLIN system
- will provide another access point to the content
- start w/ contributing our Google content; hold off on OCA content and reevaluate in a year or two?
- Discussion of Iowa newspaper digitization
- What are the parameters of the SDR and how does it affect what we do with our own content?
- what is the workflow for getting links to SDR into our catalog?
- our questions revolve around the ingest process and persistence of info
- Michigan, by choosing to be a service provider, has removed the element of collaboration w/other CIC libraries
- if other libraries develop tools, they don't have any assurance that the structure of the underlying system won't change on them
- UIC has microfilm that they want to ship to us for scanning and inclusion in OCA
- we need to wait until we have accurate cost info so we can give them a pricing schedule
